5 May 2007(Sat) - Our First Outing!

Today was our very first outing. Claire was quite nervous the night before, when we were chatting on MSN arranging the outing. “uncle, i m starting to feel nervous alrdy”

I arrived at Claire’s place early and waited for a while at the next lane, then pulled up at the side gate of Geylang Heritage, a pinkish peach private apartment building. When I SMS-ed her, telling her that I was already downstairs, she replied with what would be her trademark reply, “Okie coming down nw!”

When she came down, she looked positively sweet, clad in a simple blouse and jeans. So 5 May 2007, 10.15am, the beginning of our outings.

We probably started it off a bit nervously, but months and months chatting on MSN, we were not short on topics to chat about. She pointed out the landmarks as we travelled towards Novena Square. I had already gone for a familiarisation route on Labour Day to make quite sure how to get to the respective carparks and locations.

We arrived at Novena Square fairly fast and parked at the carpark. Claire was familiar with the place, and led me through Novena Square and along the path to Novena church. We passed by a couple of buskers along the path. Nearing the church, we met a barrage of people coming down the staircase from the church, the 10am service having just ended.

Inside the church, we found a pew first and she went off to get holy water for her family. When she came back, we chatted about the confession procedures, which incidentally could be found in the Novena booklet. The church filled up quite fast and by the time it was 11am, there were many people standing already.

Father Bill Heng presided over the service, his homily strongly emphasising on the current generation of children’s well-being and mannerisms.

After the novena, we went over to the church bookshop where Claire managed to get a Mother’s Day card. Then we walked along the path back to Novena Square where we strolled around Novena Square and the newly opened Korean themed shopping mall, Square 2. The two malls were fairly quiet, with hardly any shoppers. Maybe it was still early. At the Hallmark outlet in Novena Square, I managed to get dad’s birthday card while Claire got a congratulatory card for her friend’s new-born baby. After that, it was back to the carpark and we drove off to our next destination, Valley Point Shopping Centre.

At Valley Point, we made our way to Café in Action, her RCIA friend, Grace’s newly opened café outlet. We sat at the extension section, and placed our orders. I ordered a spring chicken while she had salmon. Grace came over later to chat with us. After the meal, I ordered a coffee and cream puffs which came in a set of five which made for a very good dessert.

Feeling wonderfully full after that, we walked back to the carpark, and drove off to Takashimaya Shopping Centre. At Takashimaya, we headed out towards Heeren first, where we wanted to look for Michael Dulin’s (new age artist) album. Finding no sign of his albums anywhere in the classical section, the counter salesperson also confirmed the fact.

We headed back to Takashimaya and went to the cards section, where we spent some time browsing through the cards. Claire chose a birthday card for a friend while I still couldn’t decide on a Mother’s Day card. Claire suggested Popular’s at Orchard MRT and we headed there. I finally managed to get a Mother’s Day card there. A Caucasian woman

After finally settling the cards, we left the cards in the car, and went back to Orchard Road where we checked out OG. Coming back to Takashimaya again, along the way, Claire ordered some name-tag stickers for her younger sister. While waiting, we had a drink at Mos Burger. I was expecting to send Claire to where her parents were, but she was quite okay to continue with the outing and have dinner somewhere. I suggested having dinner at the airport, have a look at the new Budget Terminal as well. She was fine with it, and we called our respective families that we would not be back for dinner.

After collecting the stickers, we headed back to the carpark. Out on Orchard Road, we headed for the airport. I drove at a leisure pace, enjoying the scenery and chatting more comfortably with Claire.

Reaching the airport, we parked at Carpark B, and walked around Terminal 2. She hadn’t really been back at the airport since her Korea trip in 2005. We decided to take the skytrain onto Terminal 1 and we went to the viewing gallery. Later, she suggested checking out the foodcourt. I assumed she referred to the second level foodcourt, near the viewing gallery, but it turned out to be the staff canteen, or rather a large foodcourt at the basement where you had to walk out of the terminal building from Burger King. It was the first time that I had seen the foodcourt and it was a real eye-opener. She ordered yong tau foo soup while I had sliced fish soup. Then we ordered some cut fruits.

After dinner, we took the skytrain back to Terminal 2 and took the lift down to the basement where we walked through a long stretch of corridor to the shuttle bus-stop. The shuttle bus then took us to the Budget Terminal. The Budget Terminal was a simple affair, with the arrival and departure halls in two separate buildings. We took the shuttle bus back to Terminal 2 again, this time amongst a group of excited tourists from Hong Kong. I retrieved the car and sent Claire back to her home. It was about 9.30pm, when we reached her place.
